2008/2009 Season

The Club prize giving at the Guthrie Pavillion on Friday evening the 16th of October 2009 wrapped up what had been a busy couple of weeks with the previous weekend at the Takahe Akaroa National Road Relays followed by the 102nd AGM midweek.

The miserable weather in Christchurch did not stop members from enjoying themselves. Despite the Senior Mens A team’s gallant efforts (5th in 4.20) and that of Tim Dobier as replacement, the late withdrawal due to injury by Mat Lambert almost certainly cost the team a 4th placing and maybe a chance at a possible medal, which combined with the miserable weather prevented the team from improving on the clubs best ever time in the relay from 1981of 4.18. The Club was also represented in the C grade with a very respectable 5th place showing after the team was pieced together with a number of very young and/or relatively new members rather late as a result of having to scratch a Junior mens team. Depsite this they edged the Masters Mens team for time 5.05 to 5.11. A composite team completed the clubs representation comprising a good mix of members.

At the Club prize giving, after some light refreshments Club President Danette Little presented the Club trophies to the past summer (with assistance from Stafford Thompson & Catherine O’Sullivan) & winter season winners (with assistance from Dave Crewe). This year the guest speaker was club member Tony Dodds, who recently finished 4th at the World Triathlon Champs in the Elite Under 23 age group race on the Gold Coast after leading till late in the run and despite running a 31.40 10km!?! Tony’s very professional presentation, included a video clip of the race, and gave a great insight into how he got into the sport from a swimming background, his introduction to the club a few years back through Eddie Smith, and his training, and racing in Europe.

The final few awards were then presented, culminating in the Athlete of the Year award with this years outstanding and deserving recipient being Anna-Lisa Uttley for her 4 NZ agegroup titles (see below), Otago 3,000m Women 16 & under record of 9.55 and her selection to represent NZ at the World Secondary Schools Cross Country in Slovakia in April 2010
