Kelly's Canter, Palmerston (16 October)

The Ariki team once again took the teams title, in the annual Kelly's canter 4km event, up and down Puketapu Hill in Palmerston. In lovely fine conditions, Dougal Thorburn, Stewart Paul, Russell Hurring, and Allan Williment, tackled the challenging climb and descent of the famous Palmerson hill. Theresa Hurring meanwhile walked the course, and Dougal Thorburn won the event.

Club Closing (8 October)

It was the final day of the season last Saturday, with a small handful of keen souls turning up at the Bayfield Park clubrooms, for a run or walk. These were generally fairly short, with most people sticking to the general vicinity of the clubrooms, round the Andersons Bay, Tainui area. During the evening, the club prizegiving was held, with the many club trophies and awards announced and presented. During the evening, slides were shown, of the recent "Team Ariki" Hood to Coast exploits in the USA.

Well done to Dougal Thorburn, with a win in the hill free 10km event out at Outram, in an great time of around 32 minutes.

Run/Walk with Caversham (1 October)

Some club members met at the home of Lyndon Brown (from Caversham harriers) in Pacific St, Roslyn, last Saturday afternoon, for a combined run or walk. Most runners and walkers made their way round to Ross Creek, and eventually to the bottom of the Pineapple track, where a refreshment table had been set up by the Caversham senior men, stocked with stubbie bottles of beer and Moro bars. Afterwards the various packs made their various ways back to the flat, where an excellent spread had been put on for afternoon tea. Many thanks to Lyndon, and his running colleagues for the use of their flat, and to Caversham for the hosting offer.

Crew's Brighton Run (24 September)

A few keen Ariki members, as well as a few from Taieri harriers, who had been invited, turned up at Dave and Nola Crewe's home at Brighton last Saturday. In cool showery conditions, a couple of running packs, and a walking group, headed out into the hills, via McIntosh Rd or Scroggs Hill Rd, to emerge at the now legendry beer and cream cake stand, once again set up at the top of McIntosh Rd. Once a drink and cake had been consumed, runners made ther way back to the Crewe's home, to enjoy afternoon tea. Many thanks again to Dave and Nola, for opening up their home, and for making it a most enjoyable afternoon.

Port Road Race (17 September)

Another good day for the club, with many pleasing results in the challenging 12km Port Chalmers to Dunedin road race. Gene Sanderson, Brent Halley, and Alastair Chisnall, comfortably took out the teams title for the open men's section. Those three, and Peter Bromley, Stewart Paul, and Allan Williment, won the 6 person teams title. Well done to Gene Sanderson, for picking up 1st man across the line title, and also 1st master across the line. In the junior events, held round Logan Park, Sian English recorded fastest time in the women under 19 grade, and Hanna English picked up 2nd fastest time.

Run with Leith and Moro Marathan Events (10/11 September)

A few keen club members turned up at Leith's clubrooms at Chingford Park last Saturday, for a combined club run or walk. Most tackled the track up Mt Cargill, from Bethunes Gully, reaching the junction leading round past Buttars Peak and the Organ Pipes, before returning the same way. The walkers meanwhile remained at a somewhat lower altitude, exploring some of the cycle tracks near Bethunes Gully.

Meanwhile, well done to Will Smith and Drew Costello, for completing the full marathon on Sunday. Will finished 2nd in the open mens section, in an extremely good time of 2hrs 44. Well done also, to Jesse Gibbs, Hamish Dobson, Bryce Saunders, Anthony Trainor, Sarah Chisnall, Stewart Paul, Russell Lund, Peter Bromley, Phil Napper, Carol Chettleburgh, and Karen Martin completing the half marathon.

Road Relays and Run (3 September)

There were 15 Ariki members up in Auckland last weekend, for the National road relay champs. The course ran over approx 64km of back roads in the Hunua Ranges, starting and finishing at Camp Adair, southeast of Papakura. The theme for the day was the rugby world cup, with both teams wearing the colours of a participating country, at certain stages of the day. The green team consisted of Brent Halley, Gene Sanderson, Dave Catherwood, Chris Weddell, Callan Moody, Anthony Trainor, Zach Butler, and Jesse Gibbs, and the white team Emma MacDonell, Nathan Baxter, Allan Williment, Catherine O'Sullivan, Dave Crewe, and Danette Little. Well done to all those runners, and many thanks to Dave Crewe, for organising the weekend, and to Dave Catherwood for finding 15 rugby outfits.

Meanwhile, back in Dunedin, 13 turned up at the clubrooms, for a run or walk in nice fine conditions.

Peninsula Relay (27 August)

Well done to the 3 club teams, who performed very creditably in the annual Peninsula relay last Saturday. This event is now on a course taking in Highcliff Rd to Portobello, then a new loop taking in parts of Hoopers and Papanui inlets, before returning along the harbourside to finish at Macandrew Bay.

The teams were, (James MacDonell, Aaron Anderson, Peter Bromley, Allan Williment, Peter Tutty, Brent Halley, Malcolm Hammond, and Gene Sanderson), (Hamish Dobson, Tim Dobier, Dave Catherwood, Bryce Saunders, Anthony Trainor, Callan Moody, Chris Weddell, and Drew Costello) and (Sian English, Erin O'Brien, Anna Kean, Emma MacDonell, Sarah Chisnall, Julie Wilson, Hanna English, and Dalise Sanderson) These teams finished 5th, 6th, and 8th respectively, on handicap.

Club Run (20 August)

A small to moderate number turned out at the club's Bayfield Park headquarters last Saturday. Most headed initially across to John Wilson Drive, then right along to Lawyers Head, before running the length of the beach to St Clair. The keenest runners remaining at that stage, included the track along to the headland at Second Beach, before making their way back across Kettle and Hancock Parks, and finally back to the clubrooms.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Julie Wilson, on a fine performance in winning the masters women 50-54 age group, at the National road champs in Wellington.

Club Run/Age Group Events (13/14 August)

The club hosted Leith harriers it's Bayfield Park headquarters last Saturday. Most of the runners headed up Silverton St and Highcliff Rd to begin with, generally as far as the track to the soldier's monument. The group split there, with the keener runners carrying on to tackle the steep District track down to Portobello Rd, and another group heading down the track to Tomahawk Lagoon, before returning along the beach. Many thanks to Leith for coming along, and their company.

Congratulations to Sian English and Anna Kean, for their placings in the age group grades at the Otago Road champs on the wharf circuit on Sunday. Sian won the girls 16 and under grade, and Anna was 2nd in the girls 19 and under.

Clyde to Alexandra (6 August)

The club contested the annual Clyde to Alexandra road race, and associated age group events, in nice fine conditions up in Central Otago last Saturday afternoon. We continued to feature well in the top 3 placings, with highlights being, Jesse Gibbs and Anthony Trainor 1st and 2nd respectively, in the mens 19 and under. Anna Kean won the womens 19 and under. Other notable placings were, Callan Moody 2nd in the open men, Stewart Paul 3rd in the masters men 35, and Julie Wilson winning the masters women 50 grade. Also Aaron Anderson, Keiran Duncan and Kirsty Little had 3rd placings in the boys 14 and under, boys 16 and under, and girls 12 and under grade respectively.

Run from Hoopers Inlet (30 July)

As the clubrooms were booked last Saturday, the club travelled out to Hoopers Inlet, near Portobello, on the Peninsula. The majority of runners ran a loop which took in part of Papanui Inlet, with some faster runners also adding in a run along to Allans Beach, and along part of the beach itself. When everyone had completed their run or walk, afternoon tea was put on back at Hoopers Inlet hall. All in all it proved a pleasant afternoon, and change of scenery.

Club Run (23 July)

With many athletes away contesting the National cross country champs in Christchurch, only a fairly small number turned up for a club run last Saturday. Most runners ran round the Tomahawk, Centre Rd, Highcliff Rd circuit, with a few runners opting for something shorter, while a few walkers headed in the direction of Tainui. Well done to all who participated at the Nationals.

Club Cross Country "Ariki Results" (16 July)

The club's annual cross country event, in conjunction with Hill City harriers, was held in very windy conditions in and around Rotary Park last Saturday. Chris Weddell was 1st on handicap for Ariki, round the 5 lap circuit, while Dave Catherwood recorded fastest time, of 19min 28 for the approx 5.5k. Afterwards everyone made their way back to Ariki's clubrooms for a most welcome afternoon tea.

Otago Cross Country "Ariki Results" (9 July)

The club contested the Otago crosscountry champs, out at Waikouaiti racecourse last Saturday. There were again very pleasing results across many of the grades. In the senior mens race, Dougal Thorburn and Callan Moody finished 1st and 2nd respectively, with Dougal posting an impressive sub 40 minute time, for the challenging 12km course. The club really did itself proud in both masters mens grades, with both the masters men 50+, (Russell Hurring, Alan Nicholls, and Mike Wilson) and the masters men 35+ (Bryce Saunders, Stewart Paul, and Brent Halley) winning the teams titles. Bryce and Stewart were 2nd and 3rd respectively across the line. The masters men 35 second team (Russell Lund, Allan Williment, and Peter Bromley) were also 2nd in the overall teams result. Other top 3 performances included, Benjamin Lund 2nd in the boys 10 and under, Hanna English and Erin O'Brien, 1st and 3rd respectively in the girls 14 and under, Joshua Browne 1st in the boys 14 and under, Sian English 1st in the girls 16 and under, Anna Kean 2nd in the girls 19 and under, Julie Wilson 1st in the masters women 50+, and last but not least, Chris Weddell 1st in the open race.

Club Run (2 July)

There was a moderate turnout of runners and walkers at the clubrooms last Saturday afternoon. The runners set out along Portsmouth Drive initially, before being given a surprise tour of one of Russell Lund's construction sites. They then ran via Hillside and Forbury Road, to the St Clair Esplanade, and back to the club via Kettle Park and Hancock Park, and streets of Tainui or Andersons Bay. The walkers meanwhile did a circuit taking in Highcliff Rd and McKerrow St.

Edmond Cup Steeplechase "Ariki Results" (25 June)

The club was well represented at the Edmond Cup events, at Wingatui racecourse, last Saturday. Highlights from the results, were Dougal Thorburn and Callan Moody finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the senior mens grade, and Caitlin O'Brien and Anna Kean finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the girls 19 and under grade. Also in winning form in the younger age grades, were Joshua Browne, in the boys 14 and under, and Anthony Trainor in the boys 19 and under. Benjamin Lund finished 2nd in the boys 10 and under, and Erin O'Brien 3rd in the girls 14 and under. The club did well again in the masters 50+ grades, with Dalise Sanderson 3rd masters woman, and Alan Nicholls 3rd masters man. The masters men 50 (Alan Nicholls, Mike Wilson, and Gene Sanderson) won the teams title for that grade. The 3 person relay team (Lisa Flett, Peter Tutty, and Catherine O'Sullivan) finished in 2nd place.

Club Run (18 June)

With many younger runners away at the National Secondary schools crosscountry champs, at Ashburton, there was a fairly small number at the clubrooms last Saturday. Those that did turn up, hopped into cars, and drove to the Logan Park area, to have runs through part of the Botanical Gardens, and Ross Creek network of tracks, in an effort to escape the windy conditions closer to the clubrooms. Some of the runners ventured as far as John McGlashan College, and returned to Logan Park via Queens Drive, and through the University campus, with Russell Hurring electing to run all the way back to the clubrooms.

Combined Run with Caversham and Barnes Cross Country (11/12 June)

There was a good turnout of runners and walkers at Ariki's clubrooms for combined pack runs with Caversham. The slower pack wound its way up many paths, to the Waverley area, while the medium pack tackled Arthurs walk, ending up at the top of McKerrow St, before returning via Duckwoth St, and through Andersons Bay. Meanwhile the most of the faster runners went as far as Centre Rd, (with a few coming down the soldiers monument track) and back via Tomahawk, and Andersons Bay cemetry. A couple of keen faster runners also ran up the Karetai track. The walkers meanwhile did a circuit taking in Highcliff Rd, and coming down McKerrow St.

A good result for the club in the Barnes crosscountry races at Kettle Park on the Sunday, with the open men (Allan Williment, James MacDonell, Phil Napper, Drew Costello, Mke Wilson, and Peter Bromley) taking teams honours, with Allan 2nd across the line on handicap. Also taking top 3 placings across the line, were Erin O'Brien for the girls 16 and under, Jordan Frost for the boys 12 and under, and Julie Wison in the open womens race. Sian English took out fastest time for the girls 16 and under.

Queen's Birthday Run (4 June)

A fairly small group turned up at the clubrooms last Saturday, due in part to it being a long weekend. The runners set out initially to John Wilson Drive, with most runners heading along to Lawyers Head, then back along the beach to St Clair, before finally heading back via Norfolk St and Bayview Rd.

Hurring's Run (Dunback) - 28 May

The club held its annual mountain run last Saturday, hosted by Russell Hurring, out in the backblocks near Dunback. After meeting in the Dunback domain, a procession of vehicles headed into the hills north of Dunback, where we commenced a steady climb, to approx 500m above sea level. Some of the slower runners, and walkers, turned around at various points, and returned to the cars the same way, where as a hardy group of about 10 faster runners tackled another steep hill or two, before finally getting back to the vehicles after about 2 hours. Afterwards, a very welcome afternoon tea was put on, in Dunback hall, including the Hurring's famous soup. Many thanks to Russell and Theresa, for organising this popular club outing, and for their excellent hospitality.

Ponydales 2011 (21 May)

Another very good day was had by the club, at the annual Leith crosscountry relays (Ponydales) up at the Dunedin Pony club arena, above Halfway Bush, in fine sunny conditions last Saturday afternoon. Highlights in the results included, masters men 50 (Mike Wilson, Phil Napper, Gene Sanderson, and Russell Hurring) winning that grade. Also in winning form, were the girls 16 and under team of Melissa Halley, Hannah English, Jess Todd, and Sian English, with Erin O'Brien, Anna Cross, Amy Little, and Jodie Little 3rd in that grade. The open mens team of Callan Moody, Will Smith, Dave Catherwood, and Zach Butler, finished 2nd in the 3k per lap event. Well done also to the open women's team (Anna Kean, Nadia MacDonell, Sarah Chisnall, and Caitlin O'Brien, for finishing 3rd in that grade. Special mention also, to the 4 children's teams, for finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

3 Mile Event (14 May)

The club 3 mile, (5km) was held in lovely fine conditions round Bayfield inlet, last Saturday afternoon. This year it was a self handicapped event, with runners all estimating a time. The closest to the estimate was the winner of the title. Mike Wilson and Russell Lund were both just 2 seconds off their estimates.

Lovelocks (7 May)

There was a good turnout of members, once again, for the annual Lovelock relays, at Logan Park last Saturday. The senior mens number 1 team (Zach Butler, Dougal Thorburn, Dave Catherwood, Nathan Baxter, James List, and Callan Moody) finished in 2nd place, followed by the senior mens number 2 team (Will Smith, Chris Weddell, Tim Dobier, Jesse Gibbs, Anthony Trainor, and Regan Bones) in 3rd place. Caitlin O'Brien, Sian English, Hannah English, and Anna Kean, came 1st in the high school girls grade, with Caitlin recording a fastest time. The other team to feature with a top 3 finish, was the masters men number 1 team (Bryce Saunders, Russell Lund, Peter Bromley, Allan Williment, Brent Halley, and Tim Wilson) finishing 2nd in that grade.

Meanwhile well done to Dougal Thorburn and Luke Hurring, for finishing 4th and 5th respectively at the recent Rotorua marathon, with both posting sub 2 and a half hour times.

Club Run (30 April)

There was a very pleasing turnout at the club, in lovely fine conditions last Saturday. Most runners ventured out along Portsmouth Drive, Custom House Quay, and Anzac Ave, to Ravensbourne, splitting up along the way, according to speed and inclination, with some turning back around Logan park area. Most who went along to Ravensbourne, took in the harbourside walkway on the return journey. Meanwhile, a few keen souls added in a run over Signal Hill.

Easter Weekend Activites (23 April)

A few keen runners turned up to the club on Easter Saturday. Most enjoyed a run along St Kilda and St Clair beaches, to the St Clair Esplanade, before returning along the sports fields. On ANZAC DAY, the club's annual fun run/walk from Bayfield Park to the Highcliff soldier's monument, and return, was held, with gold coin donations received going to Montecillo war veterans home. Approx $125 was raised. A commendable effort, considering it was a holiday weekend.

Lovelock Relay Trials (16 April)

The club held its annual trials to try to determine teams for the Lovelock relays, on a measured 1500m course at Bayfield Park last Saturday. Two trials were held, one for faster runners and another for slower runners, in very wet conditions underfoot. After the trials had been completed, several runners went out for a short warm down run, across to the Tomahawk area. A few keener runners threw in a little extra along the domain at Tomahawk, returning along the beach. Well done to Nathan Baxter and Julie Wilson, for being part of winning teams in the 3 Peaks race on Sunday. Nathan was in the senior mens 2 person team, and Julie in a mixed team.

2011 Karetai Challenge (20 March)

The club held its annual Karetai Challenge event, in ideal conditions last Sunday morning. 135 runners and walkers tackled the demanding 16.5km circuit, starting at Shiel Hill Tavern, and taking in both Centre and Karetai roads, before returning from the top of Karetai Rd down Highcliff Rd. Ariki members running included, Will Smith, Allan Williment, Dalise Sanderson, Carol Chettleburgh, while Richard and Karen Martin completed the walk. Many thanks to Phil Napper, the chief organiser, and his large team of Ariki volunteers, for a most successful event.

15th Papatowai Challenge (26 February)

The Papatowai Challenge, 15.5k run/walk, was once again held from Wayne Allen's crib in the Catlins last Saturday afternoon. Dougal Thorburn had another great run, to easily win his 3rd Papatowai title. He was followed by Will Smith, who finished 2nd. Sarah Chisnall had another creditable performance, being the 3rd woman home. Other Ariki members to participate included, Alastair Chisnall, Allan Williment, Dave Crewe, Harry Griffiths, Nola Crewe, Richard Martin, Karen Martin, and Carol Chettleburgh.
